Important Dates/Information
-Wed Apr 12, Fieldwork to OMSI Earthquake Lab* -Fri Apr 14, Fieldwork to Columbia River Gorge with the Audubon Society* *More information on both of these trips will come out the afternoon before the trip. Thank you! Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -Xtra math fluency practice xtramath.org (or multiplication flashcards) -Multi digit addition/subtraction practice -spelling HOWLs Ms. Whitney and Ms. Shannon came into the classroom to lead a discussion on the book "Mr. Peabody's Apples." In the story, a student assumes that his teacher is stealing apples, when it turns out that the teacher is paying for the apples in advance, so it simply looks as if he's stealing apples. This led to a discussion on rumors and how hurtful and damaging it can be to spread rumors and discuss something that we don't know all the facts about. Here is a link to a video of someone reading the book, in case you wanted to hear it for yourself and discuss it again at home. https://youtu.be/k9li_CDJmv8 Math This week, we covered adding and subtracting with three digit numbers. We learned that it is extremely similar to computing with two digit numbers...there is just now also the hundreds place! We took some time to practice adding and subtracting with carrying and regrouping. Listen to your student explain the number 314 using place value (three hundreds, one ten, four ones) Ask your student to solve the problem 413 - 245 and have them explain their thinking Extend the learning by practicing three digit addition and subtraction together! Literacy We focused this week on point of view. We looked at different pictures and determined the different points of view that were depicted in the picture. We then discussed how in writing, there are three different points of view: first person, second person, and third person. We then read different passages and determined which point of view it was from. Then, we read an article to determine the author's point of view and then wrote about our own point of view and whether it was the same or different. The topic of the article was time in school and the author's point of view was that we need more time in school to learn about a variety of different subjects. Listen to your student explain the difference between first person, second person, and third person Ask your student what is their point of view on the amount of time that we spend in school Extend the learning by reading different stories together and determining the author's point of view Expedition We synthesized our reading on the three different types and did some comparing and contrasting of the three. We began to look closely at the rock cycle, which is going to continue into this week. It has been a lot of fun seeing everyone's geology collections! Thank you for letting us bring those in. Listen to your student explain the three different types of rocks Ask your student for some examples of each different type of rock Extend the learning by researching more examples online! We love looking at rocks! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments!

-Wed Apr 12, Fieldwork to OMSI Earthquake Lab -Fri Apr 14, Fieldwork to Columbia River Gorge with the Audubon Society *This trip has changed!* Originally, we were going to Beacon Rock. However, the rock is closed due to damage from winter storms. The great news is that the Audubon Society has another gorge trip available, so instead we will be hiking up Horsetail Falls. It is a much easier hike, here is a link with a description for it: http://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Horsetail_Falls_Loop_Hike Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -Xtra math fluency practice xtramath.org (or multiplication flashcards) -Multi digit addition/subtraction practice -spelling Math The week before break we spent some time doing a variety of different math topics. We reviewed telling time, counting money, as well as accurately measuring length and weight. We especially had fun measuring weight using balance scales. In addition to that, we are still working on our multiplication fluency facts. Literacy We discussed authors purpose and learned that there are three main purposes authors have when writing that's easy as pie to remember. Authors write to either persuade, inform, or entertain (PIE)! We looked through scholastic book catalogs to find books that fall under each category. Expedition Our fieldwork to the Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals was awesome! We were taken on a full tour and saw a variety of different rocks, minerals, gems, fossils and petrified wood! The trip got us all really excited to continue learning about geology (pictures will be up on the website soon). In class, we completed three readings on the different types of rocks and practiced taking notes as we read. We learned about igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. We used a note catcher that asked us to find how these types of rocks are formed, characteristics of these rocks, interesting facts, and examples. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! Important Dates/Information
-Mon Mar 20, Fieldwork to Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals I will email out a reminder on Sunday! -Wed Apr 12, Fieldwork to OMSI Earthquake Lab -Fri Apr 14, Fieldwork to Beacon Rock with the Audubon Society If you want to chaperone this trip, please email me back by Monday 3/20. So far, we have had a lot of parents reach out willing to chaperone, so we will need to do a lottery. I'll be in touch sometime next week regarding the results. We are enforcing a new rule of no Pokemon cards at school at all. The students have not been able to keep the cards to only after school. The cards have been a distraction during class time. Thanks for your understanding! Pokemon books are okay though! Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -Xtra math fluency practice xtramath.org (or multiplication flashcards) -spelling Math This week, we began a new project called Wonkyville. We created a town in our classroom that is a bit wonky, our houses don't exactly fit together quite right! There were folders laid around the classroom with different parts of a house: roof, walls, door, windows, and cost. The students randomly pulled a card that gave them either a multiplication or division problem to solve. We then drew out our houses and wrote a short paragraph about it. Many of our houses turned out really silly! Listen to your student describe the dimensions of their Wonkyville house Ask your student to tell you how they knew if a problem was a multiplication or division problem Extend the learning by practicing those multiplication facts at home! Literacy We have been working hard in our literacy groups, which allows me to work with all of the students at their appropriate level in a small group or one-on-one setting. We work on a variety of things including fluency, reading with expression, and comprehension strategies such as plotting the plot of the story or discussing character traits. We are on the third Upside Down Magic book called Showing Off. We really love this series and will begin doing some comparison work between the books soon. Listen to your student share what types of activities we have been doing in guided reading groups Ask your student to give a short summary of the second Upside Down Magic book called Sticks & Stones Extend the learning by reading some books together at home Expedition We have officially started geology and are so excited about it! On Tuesday, Ms. Nicole came in to help us kick off our expedition. She is studying hydrogeology and had lots of amazing rocks to show us as well as great information on types of geology and the rock cycle. We also took a closer look at the layers of Earth and discussed what geology is. As many of you may have heard, we have a class pet now! His name is Bax Rocky Road Pebbles and he is a rock. We've spent some free time making him clothes and accessorizing his house. He has joined our crew at a perfect time since we're now studying geology! He has really brought our crew together; he is incredibly cute and we all love to read to him and dress him up. He's such a calm little guy, it's perfect! Listen to your student describe some of the rocks Ms. Nicole brought in Ask them to describe the epic race of Bax vs Pebbles vs Hailey Extend the learning by watching this video we watched on geology together and discussing it! https://youtu.be/KTvsWd4HpAk Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! -Mon Mar 20, Fieldwork to Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals More information on this fieldwork to come soon! -Wed Apr 12, Fieldwork to OMSI Earthquake Lab We will need parent drivers for this trip! The program currently includes room for 5 chaperones, so preference will be given to those chaperones that can transport more students! We want to keep it at 5 chaperones, if possible, due to cost reasons. If needed, a lottery will be used. We are always in need of backup drivers, so even if you can't fit a lot of students please let us know if you're available! Thank you! Please email crew parent April at [email protected] by Mon March 20 if you can chaperone. Here is a link to our amazing Portland Bridges book that is available for purchase, but the ebook is free!: Hardcover, Softcover, PDF version (all paid) ebook version (FREE!) Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -Xtra math fluency practice xtramath.org (or multiplication flashcards) -spelling Math We are beginning to see an increase in fluency in our math facts! It is really exciting. Last week, we discussed the equal sign and what it means when you use it. We looked at equations such as 24 = 6 x 4 or 4 x 3 = 6 x 2 and determined whether or not they are true statements. We practiced saying "is the same as" instead of "equals." We also continued our work with fact families and practicing our Xtra math flashcards. Listen to your explain how to say the following expression is read 5 x 6 = 3 x 10 (five times six is the same as three times ten) Ask your student to tell you if the following expression is true or false, 3 x 4 = 12 / 3 Extend the learning by creating more expressions to practice at home Literacy This week we focused on central message. We talked about how the central message is the lesson that the author is trying to teach you. Sometimes, it can be pretty tricky to find the central message! So, we can ask ourselves the following questions to help guide us to the answer: What is the problem? What do the characters do about the problem? What lesson do the characters learn? What lesson does the author want you to learn? Listen to your student share the central message of Horton Hears a Who or The Sneetches Ask your student to give the definition of the central message of a story Extend the learning by reading some books together at home and discussing the central message Expedition We celebrated the end of our bridge expedition by strength testing them! You could really see the growth in their learning based on how much stronger our bridges turned out. Multiple bridges maxed out at 50 pounds! It was really exciting. We used the rest of the time to do extended literacy as well as team building activities. We played a game called Sticker Heads as well as Lift the Pole. Lift the Pole was especially challenging and allowed us to have a good conversation about what to do when we're feeling frustrated or stuck when collaborating. Listen to your student share how much weight their bridge held Ask them to describe our games Sticker Heads and Lift the Pole Extend the learning by asking them what they are most excited about for our upcoming geology unit! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! Important Dates/Information
-Mon Mar 20, Fieldwork to Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals We will need parent drivers for this trip, so if you are available to drive please email our crew parent April at [email protected] with the maximum number of students you are able to drive with car seats. This is a half day fieldwork, we are expected to be back at school by 11:30a. Please let April know by Thursday if you are available to chaperone. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out. I loved hearing the students share our learning process and be really proud of our final products. Thank you for all of your support! Here is a link to our amazing Portland Bridges book that is available for purchase, but the ebook is free!: Hardcover, Softcover, PDF version (all paid) ebook version (FREE!) Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -Xtra math fluency practice xtramath.org (or multiplication flashcards) and math game homework -spelling Math We continued building our understanding of division this week by practicing more story problems as well as problems on whiteboards. We had a lengthy discussion on how to tell when to multiply in a problem and when to divide. Ms. Kerry made a flow chart that helped us realize that when you start with the total number and are told how many groups there are that means you divide! When you are told the number of groups and how many are in each group that means you multiply. Then, we learned about fact families which describe the relationship between multiplication and division. Listen to your explain how to tell when a word problem can be solved using multiplication or division Ask your student to create the equations in a triangle fact family (here is a link to see how we have been setting it up in class https://youtu.be/qicxGq3t43M) Extend the learning by practicing both multiplication and division problems at home Literacy In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across American Day, we spent a lot of time this week reading Dr. Seuss books. On Dr. Seuss day, we took the time to read for 30 minutes with our reading buddies and celebrated with cool Dr. Seuss pencils and erasers. During this next week we will continue studying Dr. Seuss books and think about the central message or what he is trying to teach us from each book. Listen to your student share which is their favorite Dr. Seuss book Ask your student to summarize what happened in Hooray for Diffendoofer Day by Dr. Seuss Extend the learning by reading some Dr. Seuss books together at home and discussing the central message Expedition We spent our time in expedition this week putting the finishing touches on our final products and practicing sharing our learning in pairs. Some aspects we focused on included speaking in a calm voice with appropriate volume and making eye contact with the audience. We made sure to talk about while it is great to show off the finished product, we also wanted to focus on explaining the process of our learning. Listen to your student share their favorite thing about EL night Ask them to describe what the most challenging thing about EL night was for them Extend the learning by telling them what you were most proud of on EL night Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! Important Dates/Information
-Thursday Mar 2, Dr. Seuss Day (Read Across America Day) I have planned a fun day of reading on Thursday. The students are working toward either a pajama or bring a stuffed animal to school day based on good behavior. I will let you all know Wednesday afternoon if they've earned this special prize! -Thursday Mar 2, EL Night 6:30 - 8:00p Please join us as the students' final products are showcased. This is an opportunity for the students to lead you through our process of learning. -Tue Mar 7, Art Opening Party, 3:30 - 5:00 The 3rd grade crew will have art from our bridge expedition on display at News Seasons Orenco Station for the month of March. The art opening party will be in the dining area. New Seasons, 1453 NE 61st Ave http://cvcsgrade3crew.weebly.com/ Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -Xtra math fluency practice xtramath.org (or multiplication flashcards) -book report due Tues 2/28 -spelling Math This week, we started division. We used story problem examples to understand that division is splitting a number into equal groups. Individually, we worked on whiteboards to practice representing division in different ways. We used equal groups, repeated subtraction, and the number line to represent different problems. We had a good discussion on how different strategies will work for different people. Many of us really understand division by using equal groups, while others prefer the number line. Listen to your student explain what division is Ask your student to represent and solve 12 / 4 using either equal groups, repeated subtraction, or the number line Extend the learning by practicing division problems at home Literacy We started the second book in the Upside Down magic series called Sticks & Stones and we love it so far! Reading series books can be fun because the setting and characters are familiar and it gives us a great opportunity to compare and contrast the stories. We also did a lesson on the difference between the main idea and topic of a text. This is something many of us have been struggling with, so doing a whole group lesson helped to clarify this. We learned that the topic of a text is the general subject, while the main idea is what is specifically being said about the topic or the point the article is trying to get across. Listen to your student describe what has happened so far in Sticks & Stones Ask your student to explain the difference between the topic and main idea of a text Extend the learning by watching the BrainPop video that we used to help us understand this https://youtu.be/THX0XRB54Yk Expedition We have been using expedition this week to build our bridge models and put the finishing touches on our bridge proposals and sketches. It has been great to see how much the students have grown over the course of this expedition in their ability to persevere when building bridges becomes difficult. In pairs, we worked on Chromebooks to type up our proposals and will begin conferencing with Ms. Kerry for final revisions and edits. Listen to your student describe how it was for them to use Chromebooks in class Ask them to describe the process of building a bridge the second time around Extend the learning by discussing the bridge proposal found here: http://www.edcarpenter.net/portfolio/wildwood-trail-bridge/ Important Dates/Information
-Reminder that school starts 10 minutes earlier now! Doors open at 7:50a -Thursday Mar 2, EL Night Students will be showcasing all of their hard work! The focus will be on the process of how we got to where we are, more information soon to come -Friday March 10 *Full Friday!* School will be let out at 2:45p on Friday, March 10 to make up a snow day (the other extended Fridays will be Mar 24, Apr 14, Apr 28, May 12, and May 24) -Tue Mar 7, Art Opening Party, 3:30 - 5:00 The 3rd grade crew will have art from our bridge expedition on display at News Seasons Orenco Station for the month of March. The art opening party will be in the dining area. New Seasons, 1453 NE 61st Ave Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -math flash cards (on Friday, I sent home an XtraMath flyer with a sign-up code to have access to an online flashcard program. Once students enter the code, they will be assessed on where they should begin with multiplication facts. If you'd like, you can receive email updates with your child's progress. If possible, please sign up using this flyer and let me know if you didn't receive one. Thanks!) -book report due next Tues 2/28 Math We have been doing a lot of fluency practice with our multiplication facts. In teams, the students have been quizzing each other on the facts and playing a game using a set of dominoes. On the iPads, we have been using a game called Mathmateer to get faster and faster at these facts! We also filled out a sheet that helped us connect and see the different ways of representing multiplication. We represented the problem 4 x 3 by using an array, the number line, equal groups, and repeated addition. We also learned about the commutative property of multiplication, so we were sure to write down that 3 x 4 will equal the same things as 4 x 3...12! Listen to your student explain how to play the multiplication dominoes game Ask your student to explain what the commutative property is Extend the learning by practicing multiplication facts at home Literacy We finished our read aloud book Upside Down Magic! We are looking forward to reading more books from the series in the coming weeks, as well as doing a character study on Nory. We continued to meet in our guided reading groups and focused on coming up with a variety of different words to describe a character. Listen to your student describe their favorite part of Upside Down Magic Ask your student to describe the ending of Upside Down Magic Extend the learning by reading a book together and discussing the character traits of a main character Expedition This week, we read the Footbridge Over Burnside bridge proposal that architects and engineers have proposed to solve the issue on Wildwood Trail. We came up with a list of things that were present in the proposal that we also think should be in ours such as having multiple perspectives of the bridge, including projected cost, materials, etc. Then, we critiqued each others work on the sketch designs of our bridges. We had a lot of good conversations around what it feels like to be critiqued and what makes good feedback. We focused on being kind, specific, and helpful. Everyone agreed that receiving feedback can be really hard, but it is something we are looking forward to doing to continue getting better. Our fieldwork to Cathedral Park at St. Johns Bridge was incredibly wet, but really fun! The students showed a lot of perseverance by putting on a smiling face and braving the rain throughout the whole day. The bus driver was really kind and allowed us to eat lunch on the bus, because it truly did non-stop rain. We will continue working on our art pieces into the next week with Ms. Shannon. Listen to your student explain what it felt like to both give and receive feedback Ask them to describe what kinds of things they can say to give someone kind, specific, and helpful feedback Extend the learning by discussing the bridge proposal found here: http://www.edcarpenter.net/portfolio/wildwood-trail-bridge/ Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! -Reminder that school starts 10 minutes earlier now! Doors open at 7:50a -Thursday Mar 2nd, NEW EL NIGHT! Due to the snow days, we have changed EL night to March 2nd. This is to make sure all the crews have enough time to finish our expedition final products. -Thursday, Feb 16 - Fieldwork to St. Johns Bridge More information coming soon -Progress reports went home on Friday! If you haven't seen your student's report yet, check their backpack! Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -math facts flash cards -two more readers responses will be sent home this week, due back next Tuesday 2/21 Math This week, we continued our study of multiplication. We added more rows to our multiplication chart and it is almost completed. Now that we have all grasped the concept of multiplication and know different ways to represent it, we will begin becoming fluent in these facts. To start that off, we played a multiplication game that involved running up to the board to quickly solve problems. We also began writing our own multiplication story problems! This was challenging for many of us, as it was at first hard to tell when to add in a story problem and when to multiply. We realized that you multiply when the same number is being repeated or there are groups of things. We can add when different numbers need to be combined. This, upcoming week, we will be going to the computer lab to type up our problems and are hoping to send them home for our families to do! So, expect some homework soon :) Listen to your student explain the process of creating a story problem Ask your student to explain when to add in a problem and when to multiply Extend the learning by creating multiplication story problems for your student to solve Literacy We are finally able to get back into the full swing of our guided reading groups. The snow days and short weeks really threw off our schedule, so we were all really glad to get back together in our groups for reading. Our focus for this week has been on character traits and building on our reading fluency and expression. We have been having a lot of fun using our fluency sticks to track our reading. This helps us not skip over words or lines and read with a steady pace. Our read aloud book Upside Down Magic has been a lot of fun to read. We have had a lot of good laughs with that book! Listen to your student explain what a character trait is Ask your student to describe the character traits of Nory from Upside Down Magic Extend the learning by reading a book together and discussing the different character traits of a main character Expedition This week, we are tackling an engineering problem! We read the beginning of a blog post from a Portland hiker who is concerned about a safety hazard on a trail. In Forest Park on Wildwood Trail, there is a portion of the trail that crosses W. Burnside St. There is always a lot of traffic and cars zipping by...so we brainstormed solutions to solving this. As a class, we decided that building a footbridge would be the most reasonable and effective solution. In our bridge groups, we collaborated to answer questions about what our bridge design and proposal might look like. Here is a link to the blog post we read about: https://exploreportlandnature.wordpress.com/2014/01/07/proposed-pedestrian-bridge-for-wildwood-trail-at-burnside/ We only read the first portion, I haven't yet told them there is an actual footbridge proposal, we will be looking at that later this week! Listen to your student describe the problem that we worked on solving in regards to the hiking trail Ask them to describe what type of bridge they think would be best for a footbridge Extend the learning by discussing this video and reviewing the engineering process https://youtu.be/fxJWin195kU Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! -Monday Feb 6th Early Start Begins! To make up for all those snow days, school will be starting at 8:00a -Thursday Mar 2nd, NEW EL NIGHT! Due to the snow days, we have changed EL night to March 2nd. This is to make sure all the crews have enough time to finish our expedition final products. Donation Requests: -disinfecting wipes -paper towels Homework for this week: -Read each night for at least 20 minutes -book report reader's responses will be sent home on Tuesday, due back the following Tuesday -math facts flash cards Math During our short week, we continued to learn about how multiplication can be represented. We finished creating our giant multiplication table chart. It shows the arrays of all the problems from 0-10. Once we finished the chart, we looked at patterns and discovered tricks to remember times table rows. We discussed the 1x, 2x, 7x, and 10x rows. Then, we discussed how to thoroughly solve a word problem. Many of us were not showing our work or making our answers clear, so we went over the different steps to solving story problems. They include identifying the key information, writing down what the problem is asking you to do and how to solve it, solving it, checking your work, and labeling your answer and putting it in a sentence. Listen to your student describe the process of creating our giant multiplication table Ask your student to explain the patterns and names we came up for the 1x, 2x, 7, and 10x rows Extend the learning by creating story problems together and going through the steps for solving them Literacy This week, we focused in on story elements. On Monday we got to watch the Pedro Power play and afterwards we discussed the setting, characters, and plot (beginning, middle, and end). We have also been practicing doing the same for our new read aloud book Upside Down Magic for each of the different chapters that we have been reading. In the coming weeks, we will continue to practice this with our read aloud as well as the individual books we are choosing to read. Listen to your student explain what the setting and plot of a story is Ask your student to describe our read aloud book Upside Down Magic (we love this book!!) Extend the learning by reading a book together at home and identifying the setting, characters, and plot Expedition During this short week, we put the finishing touches on our bridge writing and art pieces. We also reviewed bridges by playing Jeopardy! We didn't get to finish our game, so we are going to look forward to doing that this upcoming week. Listen to your student list the different bridge words they have thought of from A-Z Ask them to describe how it was playing Jeopardy Extend the learning by practicing drawing bridges together as a family Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! -Thursday Feb 2, No School Professional Development Day -Friday Feb 3, No School Grading Day -Monday Feb 6th Early Start Begins! To make up for all those snow days, school will be starting at 8:00a -Thursday Mar 2nd, NEW EL NIGHT! Due to the snow days, we have changed EL night to March 2nd. This is to make sure all the crews have enough time to finish our expedition final products. -Monday Jan 30 - Wednesday Feb 1 Scholastic book fair! This will be open to the students during lunch and after school Donation Requests: -disinfecting wipes -paper towels Homework for this week: Homework this week will be going home on Wednesday instead of Tuesday!! Since it is a short week, the students will be coming home with a bit more work that usual so that Thursday and Friday can be used as valuable learning time for both teachers and students! -Read each night for at least 20 minutes Math We are loving multiplication! We continued our look into multiplication by discussing the different ways that multiplication can be represented. We discussed that it can be understood as equal groups (what we called loops and groups), repeated addition, or in an array! We worked in depth with arrays and discovered the difference between representing 3 x 7 and 7 x 3. When it comes to arrays, multiplication can be thought of as "rows of" so 3 x 7 look like 3 rows of 7, while 7 x 3 looks like 7 rows of 3! This was quite confusing at first, even for Ms. Kerry, but with a lot of practice we quickly got the hang of it! Then, we found arrays around our classroom and with our reading buddies! Listen to your student explain different ways to represent multiplication Ask your student to to draw you a 3 x 7 array and a 7 x 3 array and discuss the difference Extend the learning by finding arrays around the house! Some example from the classroom were our calendars and our bookshelves Literacy Last week we learned about editing our papers! We discussed capitalization, punctuation, and thinking about our word choice. We read an awesome book called Punctuation Takes a Vacation. It was all about a class that let their punctuation take a vacation...but that resulted in chaos for reading! We practiced both of these new skills and will continue this week to edit our bridge writings. Listen to your student describe what happened in the book Punctuation Takes a Vacation Ask them to describe when words should be capitalized Extend the learning by reading a book together at home and tracking all the different punctuation marks you find Expedition As we finish up our bridge writing, the students are also working on a few other projects. We have beautiful watercolor and sharpie bridge artwork pieces that are coming together nicely. We have been enjoying each other's company while painting and listening to our new read aloud book called Upside Down Magic. We also are working on a Bridge A-Z chart, it has been challenging to think of bridge words that start with Z and X! Listen to your student list the different bridge words they have thought of from A-Z Ask them to describe the process of creating their bridge artwork Extend the learning by practicing drawing bridges together as a family Please let me know if you have any questions or comments! |
